| Ever Since Philadelphia,
the label, opened it's doors on the Cameo - Parkway in the late 50's and
attracted the likes of Archie Bell, Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass and the
indefatigable svengali song writing duo of Gamble & Huff, Philly, or the
City Of Brotherly Love as it is more commonly known, has always bee a
hot bed of musical activity. Whereas in the 70's era (the heyday of MFSB)
where Stevie Wonder once accredited the city as that of a place where
musicians were mixing "the joy of love with the pain of appression".
Things have developed, and then some... |

|
| With artists such as Jazzy
Jeff having early (and large) hits in the mid 90's with his boy Will
Smith, this enabled him to build his Touch Of Jazz studio in the heart
of Philly (rumour has it he was offered more 'luxurious' dwellings but
he turned it down in favour of keeping it real) which led to such
artists as Jill Scott and Floetry (originally from South London) to hook
up with a man like Jeff to see what the Midas touch could do for them.
The results speak for themselves. Jill Scott is now one of the most
recognised conscious thought songstresses out there and Floetry wrote
the Michael Jackson ballad Butterfly! |

| For every featured artist
on this album, there are ten stories, so suffice to say that the message
is in the music and this compliation goes some way in opening up the
whole Philly world for those that don't know. To include all artists
from Philly is an impossible task, so we just have to pay props to those
who appear on this volume. From the lush arrangements of Larry Gold to
the harsh truths of Jaguar Wright (she decrees 'the sex aint good as it
used to be') to the reality of Ursula Rucker's social comment and the
sweet soul of Bilal and Musiq, Philly is a city with soul where brothers
and sisters alike help each other out. Places like the Black Lilly have
been instrumental in encouraging a generation to get up on stage, be
heard and get creative. With Philly Soul, you
are buying into a reality of love, soul and beautiful black music...hold
tight for volume two 'coz there aint enough room for it on this
one!! |
