LIZZ FIELDS - By Day By Night - released 25th August 2003

Lizz Fields is not your typical Philly brand.

Lizz Fields attended Creative & Performing High Scholl (CAPA) in South Philly and began singing background for Jill Scott as well as performing in many of the well-known artist venues on the east coast (Black Lily, Zanzibar Blue, The Wetlands and Freedom Theatre). She began opening for some of her predecessors, Jazzyfatnastees, Cody Chestnut and Kindred. Lizz thrives best in live performance; her presence is spontaneous, vibrant and infectious.  more...

PHILLY SOUL - Pop CD of the week - Sunday Times - 27th July 2003
writes

PEOPLE say to me, oh, I like R&B, but you know, I like the old R&B, not the stuff the kids these days call R&B. What is that, anyway? That’s just pop music. No, I want the rhythm and the blues. And I say to them: friends, the solution to your problem isn’t generational, it’s geographical. Turn your eyes — and, more importantly, your ears — to the city of brotherly love. That’s where DJ Jazzy Jeff (he used to work with a guy called Will Smith) has his studio. That’s where the Jazzyfatnastees and the Roots set up the Black Lily Club to help keep black music a live phenomenon. That’s where singers such as Jill Scott and Bilal grew up, worked with the local hip-hop acts, and then emerged as great soul voices. But there’s just so much good music coming out of Philadelphia these days. Where would you even start? Right here, of course, with the accurately titled Philly Soul, a collection that takes in all of the above, as well as Floetry, Jaguar Wright and Musiq. The best moments are the Jazzyfatnastees’ Something in the Way and Res’s Golden Boys, but the whole album is one long, glorious, luxurious Sunday-morning groove. Three stars
