The secret is out, Detroit got new soul! Following on
from the highly praised 'Philly Soul - Music From The City Of Brotherly
Love', Unisex head to Motor City, the home of the great Motown label, in
search of the real soul from the city by the lake. It was almost 20
years ago that the Belleville Three - Derek May, Juan Atkins and Kevin
Saunderson first sexed up disco, Kraftwerk and concrete to breed techno.
Though the music sounds like Detroit looks - a ghost future of robocops,
raves and monorails - to achieve the global popularity it currently
boasts, the genre had to leave town and took heed of soulful rumblings
and the like around the world. Although revered for its domination of
the Techno scene, the emerging talent (as well as more established
members of the Detroit musical fraternity) has just become an
increasingly diverse and original force.
On its excursion therefore, the Detroit Soul scene
took note of some worthy musical directions, taking in along the route,
hip hop, broken beat, jazz, funk, two step and, of course, lashings of
soul. The second album in the Unisex 'Soul' series sees some of the
hottest talents (as well as some stars of the future) gathered together
on a collection like no other. From the soaring tones of Amp Fiddler and
Dwele, to the complex rhythms and rhymes of the Jaylib collaboration,
Detroit Soul showcases the finest exponents of the thriving (and
growing) motor city Soul movement.
Prepare for a soulful surprise....free your mind and
your ass will follow!
